Message from the Dean

The School of Performing Arts (SPA), through its three academic departments, offers both local and international students interesting theoretical and practical courses in the Performing Arts. Our lecturers engage in various research and creative art projects. All three departments, as well as the Abibigoromma Group, hold major productions involving both staff and students. The Abibigoromma group has excellent productions and the artistes also engage in outreach programmes to second cycle schools.

In Ghana, the School of Performing Arts is linked to the wider community and establishments and thereby provides professional services to many agencies. These include the Ghana Education Service (the largest beneficiary), The National Commission on Culture, MUSIGA, NAFTI, The Ghana National Theatre, GBC ( Radio and TV), the numerous FM stations in the country, video film production outfits, professional and amateur performance groups, and creative arts agencies.

The SPA also serves the existing public universities, colleges of education (training colleges) and senior and junior high school. Our graduates (products) are already teaching in the newly opened departments of performing arts, especially dance and theatre, at the University of Cape Coast, University of Education, Winneba, and the Methodist University.

The school (SPA) has some collaboration with Clemson, a University in the US and the Helsinki University of Scandinavia. The SPA is one of the beneficiaries of the MOU signed between the University of Ghana and Western Kentucky University, in February 2013, with the purpose of developing academic and cultural exchanges and collaborative programmes. Idea are exchanged on research in the creative arts with our collaborating institutes. Our students also travel abroad on outreach programmes for some splendid and fantastic performances.

The School (SPA) also organizes international conferences. In the last academic year, two international conferences were held, namely the Legon international Film Event (Life )1 and the African Theatre Association (AfTA) conference.

The School of Performing Arts is greatly involved in the study of language, culture and the creative arts. These are the pillars of national development in most societies, as they are the major tools for socio-economic development and social change. They comment on human behaviour in polite and indirect manners. Our teaching, research programmes and performances are avenues for the recognition, maintenance, sustenance, documentation and preservation of our cultural heritage and national identity. The School (SPA) continues to motivate lecturers and students to enhance their skills, knowledge and research in African creative arts and combine the practical and theoretical aspects of performance. The SPA attracts more foreign students than any other school in the University of Ghana. We will continue to train students to find enviable places in the world market and in industries both locally and internationally.

A Senior Administrative Assistant with the School, Miss. Glover holds a B.A in Information Studies and Economics. She believes good communication skills and team work play a pivotal role in achieving organisational goals. Ms. Glover was appointed into the University in October 2021.

Students Life

Campus experience is enriched by the diversity of students and faculty from across the globe. Residential and non-residential students have ample access to the University’s academic resources in the colleges, schools, institutes, centres, departments, lecture halls, libraries and research facilities.

Students also benefit from an array of non-academic resources including medical services at the University Hospital, careers and counselling services, postal & banking services, eateries with local and continental dishes, shops, copy centres, sports facilities, as well as free wireless internet.

Admission Requirement

To gain admission to the School of Performing Arts, applicants must:
Core: Credit passes in English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science & Social Studies
Electives: Credit passes in any three electives subjects.
The programme is open to applicants interested in the Performing Arts with aggregate 24 or better. They will be expected to attend an audition or interview.
The School welcomes students from diverse backgrounds who are eager to explore the transformative power of the performing arts and contribute to the field through creativity and scholarship.

Financial Aid

The Student Financial Aid Office(SFAO) was necessitated by the increasing number of applications and requests from the students for financial assistance. Established in August 2000, the University of Ghana sees the operation of the SFAO as strategic and an integral part of its programmes as it enables needy but bright students to access university education. Financial aid is available to Ghanaian students and is intended to remove the cost barriers that may prevent one from pursuing one's educational goals.
